The Howie Motor Gun Carriage was an experimental American tank destroyer prototype developed in the early 1940s. It was designed as a highly mobile, low-profile vehicle intended to provide direct fire support and anti-tank capabilities.

 

Design and Development

 

The Howie Motor Gun Carriage was named after its designer, Major Robert Howie, and was a radical departure from traditional tank destroyer concepts. It featured an extremely low profile, with the crew positioned in a prone or reclining position to reduce the vehicle’s silhouette and enhance concealment on the battlefield.

 

The vehicle was essentially an adaptation of a small tracked chassis, with a mounted anti-tank weapon. Its lightweight construction allowed for greater speed and maneuverability compared to conventional tanks, but it came at the expense of armor protection and crew comfort.

 

Armament and Performance

• Main Armament: The Howie Motor Gun Carriage was typically envisioned with a 37mm anti-tank gun, though other armaments were considered.

• Armor: Very minimal, as the vehicle relied on its low profile for survivability rather than thick armor plating.
